The Post Office

The shop is run by a volunteer management committee. It is staffed partly by permanent part-time staff and partly by volunteers. Carolyn is our post office manager.

A bit about our history
When the previous shop closed in 2004 there was dismay in the village at the loss of this crucial service, so concerned members of the community came together to form Burton in Lonsdale Village Shop Association. Like many other community owned shops this is an Industrial and Provident Association. The Association bought the shop for the community in April 2005 with the aid of a substantial grant from DEFRA, loans amounting to £46,000 from members of the community and commercial loans. The early years of the Association were difficult as the committee struggled to sell the upstairs flat against a background of mounting debts. After two years and a refurbishment the flat was sold and the shop began to make a profit. In 2014 the Association paid the last of its debts and the shop is thriving.

In 2012/13 the Association undertook a major refurbishment of the shop to replace a dilapidated lean-to with a kitchen/storage room. This was achieved with the help of generous grant aid from the Big Lottery (Village SOS), Craven District Council, The Harold and Alice Bridges Charity, The Cooperative Membership Fund and the Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation.

We have just under 200 members and you can support your shop by joining the Association. You can join by buying a share for £10 (ask for a membership form in the shop). Membership is open to all and entitles you to come to the annual AGM (usually held in May) where the year's accounts are presented, The management committee are elected and members can have their say on the running of the shop.
